Hi, welcome to my blog. My name is Alyssandra Monkelbaan and I am currently studying to become an English teacher. I am currently a freshman at the University at Buffalo. Because of the pandemic, many students are doing all their school work online. And that got me thinking about the effects of technology (like iPads, laptops, phones) on education and childhood development.

One thing I noticed, especially right now, is how reliant kids are on technology. Even before the pandemic, kids have been a bit too reliant on technology. And that’s not their fault, their parents just shove a screen in front of them to distract them. But this way of “parenting” is bad for the child. It doesn’t allow them to use their brains in ways that are important to their development. It also isn’t good for a child to be in front of a screen for hours a day.

Now, I am on TikTok and the videos that come up on my For You Page vary. But I do get videos of teachers who talk about their jobs. And as someone going into that field, I am interested in what they have to say. And a couple teachers talked about how their students lack an imagination because they grew up on technology. Because of the screen in front of them, they never had to use their imagination to help with boredom, like I imagine lots of us had to when we were younger. These kids always had the tools available to not have to create their own fun.

This can negatively impact how these kids grow up because having an imagination and a creative thought process is important. And I am interested in researching just how technology impacts a child and their development and education.
